John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Mark 1:4).

There was nothing attractive about John the Baptist. His message didn't tell people they could healthy and wealthy. He didn't have a grand building. His clothes weren't the latest fashion. The only thing attractive about John was his proclamation of Jesus Christ.
