The Backwards Kingdom: Matthew 5:1-11

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” 

  • The Kingdom of heaven:  The reign and rule of God.  Christ as the King who advances the Kingdom.
  • Lord’s Prayer:  “Thy kingdom come.”  in STL as it is in heaven.
  • The Beatitudes as the description of citizens.  Disciples.
  • “Automaticities” -  What we do without thinking.  Unconscious reflex.
  • Goal:  The hearers recognize the Kingdom of God as necessarily distinct from the ways of the world.  The hearers will be able to define the Kingdom of God.  The hearers will memorize the Beatitudes in order to meditate on their identity as citizens of God’s Kingdom.
