Last in series leaves us wondering about Sarah and Max (and Davy)
Charlotte Mac Leod developed this series starring Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn over two decades, and this is the last book published in 1998. These are comfortable mysteries with well-developed characters that evolve through the series. Charlotte developed Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 2005, but one wonders how Sarah and Max and their 3 year old Davy got along. In this last chapter, the plot is familiar, with another unknown disturbed psychopath threatening the family. This one seem more of a stretch than the earlier books, and Charlotte must spend too much time explaining the tenuous connections at the conclusion, Still, I will miss them and wonder how Davy grows up.
Rich and entertaining as always
As always, I find Charlotte MacLeod wonderful reading. Her tongue-in-cheek humor which is so hard to do successfully is apparent in her characters and situations. I was glad that she brought the emeralds (introduced in the first book of the series) into the mystery. I learned a lot about seaweed, but not tediously. Davy is a poignant part of the story. I also like what she does with Jessie. Sarah seems to be haunted by brothers and sisters (not hers) who are strangely interdependent. I was truly sorry that this was the last book of this series. I love her exaggerated and fun glimpses into a world of--well, you'll have to read to discover it.
Fun with Sarah and Max
As always, humor mixed with mystery makes a fun Sarah and Max story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the author. It is a fitting final book for Ms. MacLeod. She has gathered together all the characters of her previous books, whether dead or alive, plus added a few new characters. A very good read!
Even after so many years I felt sad that this was her last one of the series
Vintage Charlotte MacLeod. I have read all her books before many years ago. This was a revisiting. Even after so many years I felt sad that this was her last one of the series, that tgere wasn't anymore coming.
