The Baptist War, also known as the Christmas Rebellion, was a significant slave uprising that took place in Jamaica from December 1831 to January 1832. Led primarily by Samuel Sharpe, a Baptist deacon and evangelist, the revolt was fueled by grievances over harsh slave conditions, lack of rights, and the desire for emancipation. The rebellion began on Christmas Day 1831 and quickly spread across the island, involving thousands of enslaved Africans who sought freedom. Although ultimately suppressed by colonial forces, the uprising drew international attention to the brutal realities of slavery and contributed to the eventual abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1833.
