Professor Betsey Dexter Dyer examines the wide ranging field of genetics, which is the study of the hereditary information of organisms, how it is used, and how it is transferred through generations. These fascinating lectures also address DNA sequences and how they apply to "genetic engineering," viruses, and genetic diseases such as cancers and birth defects. In addition to examining why people look and act the way they do, the course also considers the philosophical issues associated with such controversial topics as cloning and genetic ID cards.

Every thing I wanted to know about Genetics
What did you love best about The Basics of Genetics?
For some time I have been looking for a primer on genetics that would prepare me to navigate the technical vocabulary and many concepts of that science that I encounter everyday in articles, news, and lectures. Dr. Dyer's set of lectures was the perfect answer. She repeatedly moved from metaphor to concept to label letting the listener first understand and then retain the many facets of genetics. Now I understand the relationships between bases, dna, rna, chromosomes, and alleles. Not since my grandmother taught me the differences of cities, states, and countries when I was five, have felt so satisfied by an explanation. Thanks Dr. Dyer.
Fascinating
This is one of my top favorite books, maybe even my top. Betsey Dexter Dyer has a remarkable way of taking complicated information and painting a word picture such that I can see it all happening and understand it. Usually with a subject like this diagrams, pictures or charts would be helpful, but I never felt the need for any of that.
I do not have much of a science background: I took the minimum in school. But this course was so fascinating that I made my husband listen to it when I finished and I listened again, right along with him. You can hear the passion in Betsey's voice for the subject matter.
Her other course on bacteria is also superb. I wish she would make more. Until then I will listen again to the two she has made.
