In this episode we provide an overview of the Battle of Sedan in May 1940, a pivotal German offensive during the Battle of France. We explain that the German Army Group A executed the Manstein Plan (or Fall Gelb), feigning an attack in the north to draw in the best Allied forces while launching the main thrust through the lightly defended Ardennes region toward Sedan. The German success was predicated on penetrating weak and poorly prepared French defenses along the Meuse River, utilizing concentrated Panzer divisions and overwhelming Luftwaffe air support, which demoralized French troops and prevented Allied air attempts to destroy the critical bridgeheads. Despite an Allied opportunity to counter-attack before the Germans consolidated their position, French command delays, confusion, and adherence to outdated defensive doctrine allowed the German forces to break through, reach the English Channel rapidly, and ultimately achieve the strategic encirclement of Allied armies in Belgium, leading to the defeat of France.
