"The Beauty of Compassion... "
Deuteronomy 22:6-7
New International Version
6 If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young. 7 You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life.
God not only knows every sparrow that falls, but quite incredibly, also cares what happens to each one! So how would you characterize today's passage? Quaint? Charming? Endearing? It's yet another instance where some seemingly quirky commandment is packed with insight! If we are to have compassion on an ordinary bird, how much more for our fellow man? God has a unique way of developing habits of the heart, such as the virtue of compassion. Just think of it leaving corners in the grain field for the poor to reap! Treating foreigners with the kindness you'd hope to receive if in a similar situation! Regarding the elderly with due respect and compassion! Can you even begin to imagine a world without daily acts of compassion? Indeed, what would you and I be like if we were devoid of compassion?
We are told that when Jesus saw the multitudes "like sheep without a shepherd," he had compassion on them. And so he fed them all five thousand. No, not just with food for the stomach, but with food for the soul. Aware that we are wretched, blind, and poor, God shares the gleanings from his glorious bounty. Having himself come into this world as if a stranger, God is touched that we are struggling aliens in a world not our own. The beauty of compassion is that it calls us to our highest instincts for good putting ourselves in the place of others, instantly recognizing a vulnerability we've experienced, and doing whatever we can to lessen the burden, just as God has lessened ours.
The compelling question is: Whose life might be uplifted today because of some compassion I might show?
