In this episode we discuss the ever changing beauty standard and if it is a good or a bad thing. We talk about how it can create an over the top focus on physical looks which can take away and distract from more important and fulfilling tasks in life.
Living up to a beauty standard comes from a toxic focus on caring what others think. Constantly trying to impress people as you think it will bring contentment and fulfilment.
Attempting to live up to a beauty standard is a good example of how extrinsic motivation will rarely lead to fulfilment. Motivating ourselves by doing something that impresses others will not make us happy. Only indirectly. Only short term. Long term it tends to cause sadness and insecurity, because it’s not for our happiness, it’s for other people.
The beauty standard is fine if no one cares much for it, but if that was the case then the standard would cease to exist anyway! Do we need a beauty standard to hold us close to a healthy way of living? We argue that is actually does the opposite, it creates an unhealthy way of living, so it’s best to take your mind of physical looks altogether!
