Someone once said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” I believe that is the way most people are about the Second Coming of Christ. People talk about it. They say things like, “It’s got to be close.” Or, “I don’t see how God can wait much longer before Jesus returns, etc.”? But few “do anything about it.” (What do I mean?) If you knew that Jesus were going to come today at 3 p.m. today is there anyone you would warn, anyone you would witness to? Any change you would make in your life? In this message we are going to consider the end of this age and the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is coming again! The Bible is full of prophecies of His return. In John 14:2-3 Jesus said, “. . . I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” In Acts 1:11 His apostles were told: “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” We could share many more verses of Scripture, but time will not permit it. As we view the end of this age many people have what some have called “headline hysteria.” There are 3 kinds of people in this world. Those who are afraid. Those who don’t know enough to be afraid. And those who know their Bibles. Thessalonica was a typical Greek city . . . and much like many of our cities today. It was full of idols, and it had many who opposed the Gospel, and persecution often came upon those who were willing to profess their faith in Christ – Acts 17:5: “But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house. . . ” They said (vs. 6) “These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also . . . ” In light of the thought of persecution, Paul, in these verses, tells the members of that church and us how we can rest and relax in the midst of this present world. Vs. 7 – “And to you who are troubled rest with us . . . ” (REST = to lessen the tension on a bow string; relax.) He reveals that the only hope for this world is in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Hope will not be found in politics, nor in government, nor in science, nor in education, not even in “religion.” We can rest even as we face the end of the age because of the promise of the Lord, therefore . . .
I. WE SHOULD NOT BE DISHEARTENED.
II. WE MUST NOT BE DECEIVED.
III. WE WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
