What is shaping your family?

In Deuteronomy 6:4–7, we see that the spiritual formation of our families starts with God forming us. Before we can impress the love of God on the hearts of our children, we must first allow Him to capture our own.

This week in Formed: Family, guest speaker Adam Kasper, Family Pastor at TLC, challenges us to consider what we’re modeling at home and how the everyday moments of life can point our families toward Jesus.

Formation doesn’t only happen in the big moments. It happens in the ordinary, everyday “micro moments” of our homes.

As we seek to make Jesus the center of our families, may this become our prayer:

“God, parent me as I parent them.”

This past Sunday we sat with the book of Malachi and watched as God brought accusation after accusation to His people. Each time, they denied it, defended themselves, and dismissed what He was saying. Beneath every excuse was the same question: Does God really love us?

But Malachi reminded us that God's correction has always flowed from His love. Time and again, He told His people, "Enough is enough"—not to push them away, but to call them back to Himself.

As we move through this week, let's pray that we wouldn't deny, defend, or dismiss what God is revealing in our own hearts. Instead, may we receive His loving correction, trusting that His conviction is never meant to shame us but to restore us. He has always loved us, and Malachi points us to Jesus, who bore our faithlessness without missing a beat and still calls the wounded to Himself.

God isn't impressed by worship that stays inside church walls but never changes the way people live. In Amos 5:21–24, God speaks with some of the strongest language in the prophets, rejecting worship that ignores injustice and brokenness. As D.A. Carson writes, "One purpose of worship is to come to know God so well that who He is and what He does become concrete realities in our persons and behavior." Genuine worship leads to lives marked by justice and righteousness because authentic faith is reflected in the way we love and serve others. As followers of Jesus, we're invited to examine where we've compartmentalized our faith and allow God's heart for justice to shape both our personal lives and the way we engage our communities. Ultimately, new life, peace, and security are not found in a place or a performance—they are found in a person. His name is Jesus.

God loves people you'd rather write off. On Sunday, we dove into Jonah's anger in chapter 4—rooted both in a sense of injustice (that God would spare wicked Nineveh) and wounded pride (his prophecy of destruction didn't come true). Through the object lesson of a dying plant, God exposed how Jonah grieved a plant more than 120,000 people, revealing his lack of compassion. The sermon contrasts this with Jesus, who wept over Jerusalem out of love rather than anger, ultimately dying for the very people who rejected him. We'll ask ourselves: what needs to "die" in me so that others can live? Then close our time with the encouragement that God used deeply flawed Jonah to declare profound truths, meaning no one is too far gone for God to use. Text: Jonah 4:1-10

This past Sunday we invited Evan Hoekzma to launch our new series in the book of Hosea by looking at God's relentless love for His people. Through Hosea's marriage, we see a powerful living picture of God's relationship with Israel—and ultimately with us. Even when we chase after other things for our hope, security, or satisfaction, God's love never stops pursuing us. We were reminded that spiritual adultery isn't just about turning away from God; it's about giving our hearts to other "lovers" like control, approval, comfort, or success. Yet God's response isn't simply to forgive from a distance. He lovingly draws us back to Himself, reminding us that His desire has always been a relationship. The beautiful truth of Hosea is this: God doesn't just take you back—He brings you back to Himself. His love isn't fragile or dependent on our faithfulness. It's relentless, pursuing us even when we wander. As we reflect this week, may we ask ourselves: What has been competing for my heart? And may we remember that no matter how far we've run, God's relentless love continues to pursue us.

This past Sunday, Sara Krieg from The Local Church walked us through the stories of Bartimaeus and Jesus in Gethsemane, reminding us what it looks like to come before God in prayer.

Like Bartimaeus, we can boldly bring God our specific requests. And like Jesus in the garden, we can surrender our desires to the Father's perfect will. Prayer isn't about choosing between asking and surrendering—it's about trusting the God who invites us to do both.

Thank you, Sara, for opening God's Word and reminding us that we can confidently bring every detail before Him, knowing He hears us, cares for us, and is always faithful.

This week we explored why we keep praying when answers seem delayed. In Luke 18 and 1 Kings 18, we see that perseverance in prayer isn't about convincing God to act—it's about trusting the God who already promised He would.

One of the most challenging questions from the message was: How do I make sure my perseverance in prayer isn't performance in prayer?

The answer is found in God's character. We don't keep praying because our consistency earns God's favor. We keep praying because His faithfulness gives us confidence to keep coming back. Hebrews 6:12 reminds us that we inherit God's promises through faith and patience.

So if you're still waiting, don't lose heart. Keep praying—not because God needs to be persuaded, but because He is trustworthy, even in the waiting.
