Dove and Dragon Radio

The benefits and drawbacks of self-publishing versus traditional publishing.

Listen Later

Welcome to Dove and Dragon Radio with your host, M.L.! Today we're diving into a topic that every author has to consider: self-publishing versus traditional publishing. We've had the pleasure of talking to successful authors in the past, and we're excited to explore this topic with you.

So, what's the deal with self-publishing? With self-publishing, authors have complete control over their book. They get to decide everything from the writing process to the final design and marketing. This can be a big plus for authors who want creative control and the potential for higher royalties.

But, there are some downsides to self-publishing. It requires authors to take on all aspects of the publishing process, which can be daunting if you're not experienced in editing, cover design, formatting, and marketing. Plus, some readers and industry professionals may view self-published works as lower quality than traditionally published books, which could limit your potential readership.

And let's not forget about vanity presses. These companies offer publishing services for a fee, but they may not provide the same level of editing or design services as traditional publishers. It's important to do your research before working with any company that requires upfront fees.

So, what about traditional publishing? With traditional publishing, authors have access to a team of professionals who handle editing, design, and marketing. The rigorous vetting and editing process ensures that the book meets industry standards, which can give readers the perception of professionalism and credibility.

But, traditional publishing also has its drawbacks. The publishing process can be lengthy, and there's no guarantee that your book will be accepted for publication. Even if it is accepted, you may have to relinquish some creative control to the publishing company, and royalty rates are typically lower than with self-publishing.

Ultimately, the decision of which method to pursue comes down to the individual author and their goals for their book. We'll be diving deeper into these topics in future episodes of Dove and Dragon Radio, so stay tuned!
