The Big Return | FOUNDRYsermon

So let's get straight to it. Why does the average person, the everyday "normal" Christian, have problems seeing the power of God in their life?

I think it's because we fail to take a personal stance on the idea of repentance. Repentance, which means to "turn" in, is an excruciating personal word. We can't really cast it off. For us to repent, we have to admit we have things we need to turn from. Specific things. Certain things. Things that need to be talked about.

Jeremiah, a prophet to Judah during the process of exile, speaks about God bringing his people back home. It's crucial. And it's all about returning home. But the funny thing is, the way home from Exile is the same route they took while being exiled. It is littered with physical evidence of the war, the destruction and the breaking of the land.

"At that time," declares the Lord, "I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be My people."

2 Thus says the Lord, "The people who survived the sword Found grace in the wilderness— Israel, when it went to find its rest." 3 The Lord appeared to [a]him from afar, saying, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.

For thus says the Lord, "Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, And shout among the chief of the nations; Proclaim, give praise and say, 'O Lord, save Your people, The remnant of Israel.' 8 "Behold, I am bringing them from the north country, And I will gather them from the remote parts of the earth, Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child and she who is in labor with child, together; A great company, they will return here. 9 "With weeping they will come, And by supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk by streams of waters, On a straight path in which they will not stumble; For I am a father to Israel, And Ephraim is My firstborn."

"Set up for yourself roadmarks, Place for yourself guideposts; Direct your mind to the highway, The way by which you went. Return, O virgin of Israel, Return to these your cities. Jeremiah 31:1-3,7-9,21 NASB

And our own repentance is much like that. When we turn around, the way back home is through the very things that got us to this place. But Jesus doesn't ask us to do this alone. He Himself is our greatest roadmark on the path of repentance and restoration.
