Philip Marlowe is hired by General Sternwood, a wealthy, elderly man confined to his greenhouse, who wants the detective to quietly resolve a matter of blackmail involving his wild younger daughter, Carmen Sternwood. A man named Arthur Geiger has apparently taken compromising photographs of her.

But Marlowe quickly realizes that Carmen's case is just the beginning of a far more tangled mystery.
