Lauren and Jesse roadtrip over the Cascades to visit Picky Bars new co-packer, their first manufacturing change since 2012 and the official turnaround to the recent out-of-stock battles. With the updates and changes have naturally come some challenges, and they discuss the delicate balance of small business life and ownership, which as a married couple in the car alone for multiple hours… was exactly as lively a conversation as you’d imagine. “Big ships are harder to turn” as Jesse puts it, but things are back on track (!) and they dive right into some listener questions: Rebounding from a DNF S.O.’s disappointment with your lack of energy/time for extracurriculars during marathon training Sexual harassment in coaching Marketing/promoting yourself as an athlete Flat Bruce secret This episode’s topics elicit a range of emotions and some heated conversations. From Jesse reliving the DNF that springboarded a rebound win at Wildflower (his first!) they warn of the hazards of bullying through disappointment rather than pausing and processing. A listener’s partner is disappointed with their lack of availability during marathon training, to which L & J give some very Grey’s Anatomy’ish advice (“I choose YOU, I’m CHOOSING tv time with YOU.”) Things take a pause to get real about sexual harassment in the workplace, before offering insight into the marketing minds of promotable athletes, including Jesse’s secret to those beloved #FlatBruce pre-race photos.
