THE STORY: When I was just 3 years old, I went to a father/daughter banquet. After dinner, they had little competitions which thrilled my dad because he was a coach and athlete and fierce competitor. The race involved a race for 3-year-olds. We had to roll a peanut ten feet across the floor to the finish line, with our nose! I objected. And as I stood up, spoke my truth, and chose not to do the race, I saw my dad’s disappointment. From that point on, I decided not to ever disappoint my dad or anyone that I loved, ever again. That was the birthplace of what grew to be my codependency. I was not okay if I knew I might disappoint someone. I began being a people pleaser. I’ve had a huge fear of letting others down for my whole life.
What began as a shameful experience, turned out to be a beautiful gift that would carry me on through life in an empowering way. But the moment I felt that shame, I carried that forward as well, and needed to do the work to heal it.
