"The Black Cat" chronicles the disturbing descent of a once-gentle animal lover into alcoholism, cruelty, and madness. The narrator initially adores his black cat, Pluto, but under the influence of alcohol, he grows violent, eventually gouging out the cat's eye and later hanging it. Following a house fire where the ghostly image of the hanged cat appears on a wall, he finds a similar cat with a distinctive white mark that slowly transforms into the shape of gallows. His growing paranoia and hatred for this second cat, combined with his worsening temper, lead him to murder his wife in a fit of rage and conceal her body within a cellar wall. Ultimately, his own arrogance during a police investigation leads to his downfall when he taps on the wall, and the cat (accidentally walled in with the body) cries out, exposing his horrific crime.
