"As I sit quietly this evening in the Italian Alps, I know that in the morning, the sun will surely come streaming in again over those quiet waters, now some 6,000 miles and a lifetime away from me. Memories know no distance and I will miss Black Canyon. The mighty Willamette River will slip by and there will remain in its swirls and reflections the soft sepia toned images of all of my waters and the fragrance of dewy ferns on the canyon floor and a faint hope for tomorrow. This beloved place, the Blackest of Canyons; we have grown together and have given and received of each other so much. Having done so, in the end of days, I suppose we are surely even."
The flowing waters of the American West will carry you through a half century of living, as told by a simple fisherman. The Blackest of Canyons will make you laugh, cry and take stock of your own life. The Blackest of Canyons will bring you full circle!

Very enjoyable read...
A friend suggested that I read this book, and I'm glad I took his advice. As a former professional fly-fishing guide myself, I found the essence of the author's philosophy about life and its existential connection to our sport to be spot on. The writing is skilled, the story compelling, and the word pictures expressive and convincing. The only reason I gave the Blackest of Canyons four stars, rather than five, is that there just wasn't enough of it! I look forward to reading more of this fine author's work.
Fly-Fishing-Living the Good Life
This lovely story reads as a tutorial of the art of fly-fishing interwoven with the threads of family love and legacy. Beautiful language is used to describe the places and the feelings that will forever be etched in the author's mind and heart. It is also a testimonial to a father's mark on his son, as he passes the torch of his beloved sport to the next generation. If one has never fly-fished themselves or visited these hallowed places along the Willamette River in Oregon, one can almost feel the rod & reel in their hands and the waders around their legs, as they are caught up in the vivid imagery and the sights and sounds of the region. Steeped in family history, with touching vignettes of the author's dog Smokey and the shared love of the sport with his wife, it is a great read!
Father and son fly fishing in Oregon
This is an excellent story of the relationship between father and son. The writing style is informal and entertaining. It uses the family tradition of fly fishing in remote Oregon to weave together a number of incidents which ultimately forged the bond of love and respect between the two.
