In Europe and America, sexual blackmail was a lucrative business from the early 1700s up until about 1960. It was enabled primarily by two factors: a strict definition of sexual respectability and new “technologies” that made it easier for blackmailers to stay anonymous. So while the sexual revolution has helped to reduce the cases of sexual blackmail in the West, in Africa the cases are rising thanks to the internet and digital technology.
