She also talks about Masons, Shriners and Fraternities giving the blackman his identity. The author did a fabulous job in ending the chapter of identity with the fact that no matter what we do, we don't go back to the root and claim our true identity which will leave us not knowing ourselves which is why we are no better than we were in slavery.
