The Virginian Pilot from the 3rd of September 1933 contained various interviews related to the sinking of the Coldwater, as well as the complete story of what had occurred. “Courageous action on the part of Captain West was credited with the fact that there was no loss of life. ‘Captain West is the hero’ was the terse comment of Capt. Makepeace Ridley, veteran Dollar Line Captain in command of the liner. ‘To him goes all the credit. His courage, and prompt action by all members of his crew, were the reasons why all were saved. They rescued themselves, although we had a lifeboat overboard, ready to lend assistance.’”
