On this episode Hilary, Dana, and Sirius discuss what it really means to be “embodied,” aiming to rescue the term from being used as a prescriptive “should”. They frame embodiment as a quality of presence and a spectrum of positive to negative experiences, not a 24/7 state, and connect disembodiment to dominant culture, control, and mistrust of bodily knowing, including diet culture and objectification. Drawing on Niva Piran’s research, they outline five dimensions of embodiment, highlighting how social location shapes embodiment and how equitable community and affinity spaces support reconnection.

In this rerun of episode 42 hosts Dana, Sirius, and Hilary welcome fat activist and researcher Ragen Chastain, author of the Weight and Healthcare Substack and founder of the Dances With Fat blog onto the podcast. Ragen discusses her entry into fat civil rights and healthcare advocacy and describes focusing her work on intersections of weight science, weight stigma, and healthcare practice, arguing that the weight-loss industry and drug companies manipulate healthcare and media with “science” marketing. She outlines how she evaluates studies (funding, conflicts of interest, methodology, dosing, outcomes, and comparisons to existing treatments), critiques GLP-1 claims and secondary-indication narratives, and emphasizes bodily autonomy, collective harm from anti-fat bias, and the necessity of ethical informed consent, including risks, limited long-term outcomes, and denial-of-care pressures.

Dana, Hilary, and Sirius record the last Body Trust Podcast episode before a summer sabbatical. They discuss “hot topics,” including Sports Illustrated’s diverse swimsuit runway and the cultural fixation on “flattering” as code for making bodies look smaller, plus fashion imagery like aprons and restrictive mouth accessories. They reflect on Virgie Tovar’s point that thriving in the body positivity era required different skills than the current GLP-1 era, emphasizing critique, liberatory consciousness, discernment, community-building, and skepticism of marketing claims about GLP-1s and “hedonic behavior.” They share summer fat-community resources and events, including fat swims/chunky dunks, Portland’s Fat Fest (June 28 2026), BIPOC Eating Disorder Conference (virtual, July 16–18 2026), and a Minneapolis in-person event on Body Trust in the Age of Ozempic (July 24 2026).
