A read receipt with no reply. One awkward comment that takes over your memory of an entire meeting. A boss who answers your idea with “Okay, let’s think about that.” Most of us take moments like these and fill in the missing information with our own fears, then treat the story as fact.
In this episode of What If?, Jamesyn asks what happens when you stop trying to solve the mystery of someone else’s mind and look at your own. She shares what getting coached showed her about the way she listened: she could follow every word someone said and still move right past what they were feeling. That discovery didn’t tell her what anyone thought of her. It gave her a skill she could build, which was far more useful.
In this episodeIf you’ve been reading your career through what you assume your boss or your team thinks of you, start with what you actually know. The Career Signals Quiz takes two minutes and names the signal you’re dealing with: theboldlife.coach/resource_redirect/landing_pages/2151902103

Jamesyn has been watching an introverted creator in New York City document her evenings at home: soup from scratch, shoes cleaned before they come inside, time with her cat, small rituals done with real care. She finds it beautiful. And right behind that reaction comes a second one: I could not do all of that. When she imagines keeping it all up, the beautiful evening starts to look like a second job.
This episode asks what happens when self-care becomes one more standard you can fall short of. Most of us aren't filling our lives with bad habits. We're filling them with good ones until there's no room left to enjoy the well-being we're working toward. The same routine can support you or manage you, and the way to tell is what happens when you don't do it.

SPECIAL SERIES: WHAT IF? — 30 DAYS OF RETHINKING EVERYTHING
This special 30-day series is part of The Bold Life School, where we explore career evolution, identity, ambition, and what it takes to build a life and career on your own terms. Each short episode takes one familiar belief or assumption and asks a simple question: What if there’s another way to look at it? Expect thought-provoking questions, coaching-inspired experiments, and fresh perspectives designed to challenge conventional thinking and open up new possibilities. No guests, no easy answers — just 30 days of curiosity, experimentation, and rethinking what’s possible.
WHAT IF? Being Good at Your Job Isn't Enough to Get AheadWork hard. Deliver results. Be reliable. Keep getting better. Eventually, someone will notice. That's the deal a lot of ambitious women were taught, and sometimes it works. But being good at your job and having a strategy for where you want to go are two different things.
In this episode, Jamesyn questions one of the most common career assumptions there is: that competence alone moves you forward. She looks at who actually defines "good," why the next level often asks for evidence your current role never asks you to show, and why a big gap between where you are and where you want to be is usually a strategy problem, not an effort problem.
This episode sits in Recognize, the first stage of the Career Evolution Framework, where you name what's actually happening before you decide what to do about it. When progress stalls, the thought most of us reach for is "I'm not good enough yet." That thought creates pressure, the pressure drives more effort at the same strategy, and the result is more of the same. Recognize is where you catch that thought and question the strategy instead of your worth.
In this episodeWhy "good at your job" can mean something different to your manager, your colleagues, and the person who decides who gets promoted.
The difference between being evaluated for the work you're doing today and building evidence that you're ready for the work you want tomorrow.
The question Brooke Castillo asked herself when the gap between her current reality and her goal was enormous: What could I do that would make it impossible to fail?
Why the next level of your career may require a different version of you, not a more accomplished version of the person you already are.
How being good at something can keep you building a career around a capability you no longer want to use.
Three things to look at together: what you're good at, what's needed, and what interests you.
The performance review test: if you got an outstanding review tomorrow and nothing else changed, would you be happy?

You finally get the break you worked so hard for, and you can't relax into it. Within ten minutes, the voice shows up: you should be doing something, you should be using this time, you haven't earned this yet.
In this episode, Jamesyn looks at why ambitious, successful women push hardest in the space between career chapters, exactly when they most need time, space, and grace. She draws on the documentary Let It Die Here, about songwriter Linda Perry, a woman with a celebrated career who still beats herself up for taking a single day off. Then she lays out where we learned to earn our rest, how one sentence keeps the next chapter from showing up, and why curiosity and joy show you more than pressure ever will.
In this episodeWhy driven women treat the in-between season like an emergency, and what that looks like day to day.
Where the rule "you have to earn your rest" comes from, and why it's something many women were taught together.
How the thought "I should be further along" creates the exact behavior that keeps you from moving forward, and the sentence to practice instead.
What Linda Perry's unplanned songwriting shows about letting a next chapter unfold.
Recognize, the first stage of the Career Evolution Framework, and why you can't do it at full speed.
Why curiosity and joy are the real work when you're between chapters.

Episode description
Six years after leaving San Francisco, I went back for an AI conference. Somewhere between the airport and the city, I realized the city hadn't changed much. I had.
In this episode, I talk about the selves we carry and the ones we semi-retire for a season. I also explain why a quiet, heads-down stretch in your career might be Outgrowing rather than a Plateau. And I share how one comment at a hotel front desk almost decided my whole trip. If you've built a life that works and some part of it no longer fits, this one is about how to tell what you've outgrown from what you set down because you got busy.
Show notes
Gone, But Not Done: What Going Back Shows You About Who You've Become
Most of us assume we'll notice when we change. We don't. We notice afterward, usually somewhere that belonged to the old version of us.
For me, that place was San Francisco. Six years ago, it was the center of everything I wanted: the girl pack, the heels, the bar hopping, the future I could see clearly. Today I live in flats, work from a quiet home with my dogs, and spend my weekends writing. Going back for a conference showed me how far I'd moved without ever deciding to.
This episode lives in the Recalibrate stage of the Career Evolution Framework, where you ask what you learned and what's next, and then cycle back into Recognize.
In this episode:
The question to sit with:
What did you stop doing because you outgrew it, and what did you stop doing because you got busy? Only one of those is actually gone.

I tried to walk all four of my dogs at once so no one would be left behind howling and the neighbors wouldn't be bothered. By the time I reached the park, I'd dropped a leash, lost a dog, and decided the whole mess proved I couldn't keep my shit together.
It didn't prove that. It proved I'd built a plan around everyone else's comfort instead of my own capacity.
In this episode, I use a chaotic morning with my dogs to name a pattern ambitious women run at work every day: taking on everything at once so nobody is unhappy, then treating the first predictable slip as a personal failure. We'll look at the Boundary Overload signal, walk through how one thought produced the exact result it predicted, and connect it all to Stage Two of The Bold Life Career Reinvention Framework, Make the Decision.
Some noise can't be avoided. You get to choose which cost you carry.
Show NotesIn This EpisodeThere is no option where nobody makes noise. Every choice has a cost. When you always pick the quiet cost, the one that lands only on you, you end up putting your own needs last in your own life.
A predictable slip is not a character flaw. Dropping a leash when you're holding four is math, not a character failing. The same goes for the deadline that slips when you're carrying three people's workload.
Your thought creates the result that proves it. "I can't keep it together" led to anger, crates, and no walk. That outcome became more evidence for the original thought.
Knowing your limit is information, not defeat. Once you know it, you have to decide what to do with it, even when someone is going to be unhappy about the decision.
Career SignalBoundary Overload: over-functioning, over-giving, and absorbing responsibility until you become everyone's solution. It looks like competence right up until something drops.
Framework ConnectionStage Two: Make the Decision. Choose your next move without waiting for the condition where nobody objects. That condition doesn't exist.

What If It's You? How to Stop Blaming and Take Ownership of Your Career Results
The easiest leadership failure to spot is someone else's. The hardest is your own. In this short episode, Jamesyn makes the case that accountability isn't about being wrong — it's about choosing to spend your energy on the side of the line you can actually control.

The question to sit with this week:
Where are you spending your energy on the side of the line you can't control — the boss, the company, the colleague — so you don't have to act on the part that's actually yours?

The Bold Life podcast — show notes
Someone successful posts that work-life balance is a myth — that if you were truly passionate, you'd go full throttle and let your family have the leftover energy. It sounds bold. It's a decoy. In this episode, Jamesyn takes apart the "balance is bullshit" argument and names the thing it's built to hide: the problem was never what to call the relationship between work and life. The problem is load — and for women especially, the load has become objectively unreasonable.
What this episode gets intoWanting a full life is not a passion problem. Being exhausted is not a discipline problem. The real work is deciding, on purpose, what you're going to put down.
Your next stepBefore you can fix what's wrong, you have to name it. Take the free Career Burnout Signals Quiz — two minutes to identify which of the five career signals you're actually standing in: burnout, boundary overload, plateau, misalignment, or outgrowing.

You want the change. You chose it. So why does part of you fight it every step of the way?
Jamesyn is in the middle of selling her home and reducing her life down to the vital few — and instead of the relief everyone promised, she hit a wall of resistance she couldn't explain. In this episode, she takes apart a single weekend that cracked the whole thing open: a pushy friend, a dumpster in the driveway, a cruise she said no to, and the anxiety that turned out to be the most useful signal she got all month.
Here's the truth underneath it: the resistance you feel when you try to let go — of belongings, of a role, of an entire chapter — is rarely about the thing you're releasing. It's the old identity refusing to be set down. This episode gives you a way to read that resistance instead of obeying it, and to tell the difference between the part of you protecting your future and the part protecting your past.
In This EpisodeThe next time you resist letting something go, don't ask whether you should push through. Ask which part of you is doing the resisting — the part protecting your future, or the part protecting your past.
Take the Free Career Burnout Signals QuizCan't tell whether what you're feeling is burnout, misalignment, or the deeper pull of outgrowing who you've been? You look up one day and your life is a list of obligations you don't remember agreeing to. The job that keeps asking for more. The commitments that multiplied when you weren't looking. And that quiet, resentful realization that you're tired of being counted on for everything, by everyone.
Here's the truth most women never hear: nobody buried you. You said yes to all of it.
In this episode, Jamesyn breaks down the Obligation Trap — why the most capable women end up the most trapped, how your competence got read as consent, and why the obligations weighing you down aren't things you have to do. They're things you're choosing to do, for a payoff you rarely admit to — approval, belonging, safety — and then blaming on the situation.
This isn't "just set boundaries." That's advice, not strategy. This is about taking accountability for your choices — because a choice you're making by accident is a choice you can start making on purpose.
In this episode:
The signal at the center of this episode: Boundary Overload — what fires when you've been everyone's solution for too long. Left unchecked, it doesn't stay Boundary Overload. It curdles into Burnout.
