Publisher's Summary:
Fans of Tim Burton and Wes Anderson will love this new fantasy novel by number one New York Times best-selling author Alyson Noël in which a ragtag team of 11-year-olds with otherworldly abilities set out to solve the mystery behind the sudden onset of ordinary events plaguing their very unusual town.
Compared to other more ordinary towns, Quiver Hollows is a very strange, very curious place. It is also home to longtime friends Grimsly, Ollie, Ming, and Penelope. In a town where everyone is spectacularly abnormal, Grimsly feels bad about being terribly, unforgivably normal, as the town's pet funeral director. So when a series of strange and disturbing mundane occurrences begins plaguing Quiver Hollows, well, Grimsly fears his growing celebrity just might be to blame since everyone knows that the things you focus on the most have an uncanny way of shaping your world.
The group of friends also learn that the bones in the pet cemetery are thought to be the source of the strange magic that binds the town of Quiver Hollows. With the bones now gone, the town's magic is quickly dissipating. Will it ultimately become as common and ordinary as everywhere else?

Delightful...
The Bone Thief
Alyson Noel
I seem to be reading a lot of middle school books lately. I like a large variety of books from children to middle school to young adult and adult. I enjoy fiction to nonfiction, romance, mystery, science fiction, fantasy and biography. The Bone Thief happens to fall in the category of middle school, fantasy.
Imagine a town where everyone is a bit strange, everyone but one person. Grimsly Summerfield is Quiver Hollowâs pet funeral director. Yes, you read that right. He is the PET funeral director. When a goldfish dies he gives a beautiful eulogy. He is normal in an abnormal town. Suddenly, something is wrong in Quiver Hollow things are becoming (gasp) normal; they are losing their magic. Grimsly thinks he is responsible. He and his friends are determined to return Quiver Hollows to its abnormal self again. Grimsly begins a journey to find the Seer to help return magic to Quiver Hollows. On his quest, he discovers a school teaching students that magic isnât real, that it doesnât exist. He discovers the history of Quiver Hollow and a diabolical plot to take over the town.
Middle Schoolers will love this book. This is the kind of book they will want to read. The descriptions are vivid. The characters are delightfully created. Ollie can bend spoons just using his mind. Penelope has visions and can connect clairvoyantly. Ming dances ballet in the air; she can levitate. As you can see there are abnormal characters in this abnormal town. Then there is Grimsly, an orphan, loveable normal and caring person. This is an entertaining, fun book but it also has several subtle themes: believe in yourself, believe you are unique, a sense of responsibility, and be true to yourself. This is an easy read and should work will for both advanced readers and challenged readers.
Fun, but has its darker moments....
With a comparison to Tim Burton, there was no way I was passing this book up. After finishing it, I could definitely picture it as a Tim Burton movie. It has an odd, creepy feel to it, but still fun.
The chapters are incredibly short. It's fast paced and a quick read, so it's a nice book for reluctant readers. I know many children need a shorter book, and there's nothing wrong with that.
