It's more than a Halloween story; it's a history book. It might be to today's chronicles of the past what Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was in 1884. With a backdrop of rural life and times as they were in 1953, this novel reawakens our faded memory and colorfully illustrates two vanishing landmarks, both epics of an American culture and world history. The family farm, for one, and, sad as it may be, the fleeting memories of the pivotal D-day invasion under Supreme Commander General Dwight David Eisenhower. Without either we could have lost the war. This novel brings them both back to life in absorbing detail - it's a fable with a solid footing of the times for the tale's lasting cultural relevance.

It all happened amid five country towns, a few villages and hamlets where more than 65 family farms were busy raising children, apples, corn, and wheat and - all told - milking about 3,200 cows.

This is a great series fo books

This is a great series fo books, with kids growing up during WW2. Charlie was a mentor to these kids, but sadly died from cancer, when we knew little about how to stop Cancer.

Charlie comes back as a "Spirit" to watch over our kids & keep them on the straight & narrow. You will love it

Perhaps one of my favorite things about this book was Charlie Pitts- the ghostly narrator that introduces the reader to the next installment of the Pompey Hollow Book Club Adventures. At the time of this story, Charlie Pitts is a spirit or guardian angel- not a ghost mind you, according to his preference, but still happy to do all the ghostly things when necessary. While he doesn't influence the kids of the Pompey Hollow Book Club-- who are growing and maturing into teenagers now-- it's still fun to see him puff up with pride at the mention of his name by the group or provide soft hints here and there to get them going in the right direction.

This is a book with multiple aspects and layers, and it can be a more difficult read. It also touches on a number of subjects- suicide, robbery, disease, and homelessness that make for some intense reading time. It's definitely not a book for an easy summer read but given how well the story is woven together it is well worth the effort of doing so.

One minor drawback to the story that I found was that sometimes it seemed like too much was going on for one book.
