Publisher's Summary:
Beth Lowe has been sent a parcel. Inside is a letter telling her that her long-estranged mother has died. There is also a scrapbook Beth has never seen before. Entitled The Book of Summers, it's stuffed with photographs and mementos compiled by her mother to record the seven glorious childhood summers that Beth spent in rural Hungary. It was a time when she trod the tightrope between separated parents and two very different countries; her bewitching but imperfect Hungarian mother and her gentle, reticent English father; the dazzling house of a Hungarian artist and an empty-feeling cottage in deepest Devon. And it was a time that came to the most brutal of ends the year Beth turned sixteen. Since then, Beth hasn't allowed herself to think about those years of her childhood. But the arrival of The Book of Summers brings the past tumbling back into the present; as vivid, painful and vital ad ever.
Members Reviews:
I was sad when this book came to an end.
Very intriguing narrative about human frailties and how we cope with what life sends our way.
Feel the Sunshine
Good story with a surprise at the end. The structure of the book is you know there's been a breakdown of relationship right from the beginning but you don't know the details , this holds your attention right through the book. The characters were slightly cliched, uncommunicative father/husband passionate foreign wife and moody teenager but a very good untaxing read overall. Take it on holiday or into the bath
The Book of Summers
I loved this book! The characters were plausible, the story was riveting and the writing was so fresh and vibrant. I didn't guess the ending and was so surprised at what happened. A wonderful story full of colour, passion, life and a satisfatory explanation at the end with all loose ends neatly dealt with. Top marks!
Less had been more
A good summer read. The story is thrilling, romantic and well written, but unfortunately the story is too long, too many words are used to tell the same things all over again, especially at the end when you know.
Five Stars
