Publisher's Summary:
This is a self-help book. Didn't think it was, but it is. It's also a revision, a question, a confession, an apology, a love letter. This book is for you.' Eric Newborn is used to dealing with people whose lives are in crisis; he's the bestselling author of several motivational books, and an inspirational speaker. When Eric's wife dies, he finds that grief renders him helpless. There is no easy cure, no platitude to comfort him, no replacement with which to fill the deep trough of his loss. So he retreats, with his female dog, Ralph, to his isolated home on Martha's Vineyard.
Five years later, on a wild, storm-wracked night, a car crashes at the end of Eric's lane and a woman turns up at his door, seeking help. Sam is a fan who has tracked him down, convinced that Eric will sort out the co-incidences that have both destroyed and coloured her life. As Eric and Sam spin around one another like constellations in a greater universe, they set out to search for answers to their questions, and to find some meaning in the signs that we all see.
Critic Reviews:
"A powerful love story as well an exploration of the fragility of relationships. Thought-provoking, sombre and yet exquisitely tender, it forces us to confront harsh truths about life...and death." (Lancashire Evening Post)

Cool message with a great delivery
I really loved this novel. I loved how it brought me through a man's journey of life in the New Age, and then dropped me back into his "real" life messiness again with my hope and compassion for humanity left intact, and maybe even enhanced a bit.
This was the best book I have read for ages
This was the best book I have read for ages. It was beautiful to read and quite touching. The narrator has a very interesting story of disillusionment and subsequent attempts to reconstruct his life that are very well told. I enjoyed the gradual unfolding of the mysteries laid out in the first pages, as well as the intertwining of current and past chapters of his life.
Good Book!
A family member recommended reading this novel. From what she has told me it is an excellent book, and it is being passed around for the rest of the family to read.
A comforting read.
The gist of this book for me is that you can hold two mutually exclusive points of view at the same time. That things that are schmaltzy and simplistic and full of holes can be true at the same time.
The Book of Why: A Novel
Got it out of the library; loved it enough to buy it to re-re-re-read it. The ideas of
"thinking it to make it so", & and reincarnation are fascinating & hopeful. Montemarano's style & presentation make for a compelling reading experience.
