The gratuitous opening carrier F-18 operations scene in Top Gun Maverick would have been a lot less action porn and a lot more story additive had the team for the mission been shown taking off and landing before cutting to Tom Cruise walking out of his hanger Airstream.

The scene in Tom Gun Maverick between Tom Cruise and Ed Harris was brilliant calling back to Ed’s John Glenn role in The Right Stuff. Ed tells Tom he should be a 2 star Admiral or a Senator. Glenn became an Ohio Senator and Ed was wearing 2 stars in the scene.

I enjoyed Jon Hamm as Admiral “Cyclone” Simpson and Charles Parnell as Adm “Warlock” Bates in Top Gun Maverick but it would have been nice seeing Slider, Merlin or Wolfman from the 86 movie. Heck a nod to Ironside/Jester or Skerritt/Viper would have been nice too.

The strike package selection for the mission in Top Gun was horrifying. The United States military possesses capabilities better suited for the job with less risk. Also the lack of consideration for human casualties at the facility is extremely unrealistic.

The addition of Jennifer Connelly as Penny in Top Gun Maverick was a welcome sight and a fantastic tie to the 86 film. I loved the world building there. Although her car’s similarity to Charlie’s was not needed at all.

The lack of a bar serenade in Top Gun Maverick was disappointing. Also the lack of flirting between Rooster and anyone was a missed opportunity for future chapters in the story. I believe this was a stupid decision by Tom Cruise to keep the attention on himself.

I’m struggling to understand how Hangman graduated top of his Top Gun class in Too Gun Maverick. His tactics and non team playing mindset would have gotten him low marks by the instructors.

Why the enemy’s 5th Generation fighters couldn’t engage the F-18 strike package in Top Gun Maverick with Beyond Visual Range weapons is beyond me. That’s one of the keys for 5th Generation fighters.

Seeing Val Kilmer in Top Gun Maverick made up for a lot of what’s wrong in the film. It was well done with the exception of having the Pacific Fleet Commander not able to talk. He would be taken off of active duty. And we all know Iceman is the better pilot anyway. Sorry Tom.
