EnglishThe Bridge Podcast – Season 2, Episode 1 | A Dream Begins in BamyanThis story begins in an almost ruined building facing the empty niche of the Bamyan Buddha of Salsal. From that modest space, a programme was about to begin with a much bigger dream: to help Bamyan become a tourism destination and create new opportunities for local communities. In this episode, I look back at the early days of the Bamyan Ecotourism Programme — from an idea discussed during a visit to New Zealand, to support from New Zealand Aid, the involvement of the Aga Khan Foundation and local institutions, and the unexpected responsibility of managing a tourism programme without having formally studied tourism at the time. This is not simply the story of a development project. It is a story of hope, learning, trial and error, and a young team trying to introduce Bamyan to the world not only as the place of the destroyed Buddhas, but through its landscapes, culture, heritage and people.Throughout Season 2 of The Bridge, I will share the stories behind the reports and statistics: the people, festivals, local music, skiing, journeys, challenges, mistakes and unexpected moments that shaped those years. If you remember Bamyan during those years, the ecotourism programme, or the festivals of that period, I would love to hear your memories and reflections in the comments.🎙️ The Bridge | پلFrom Afghanistan to Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
اگر فصل اول را دنبال کردهاید، خوشحال میشوم در بخش نظرات بنویسید کدام قسمت یا کدام لحظه از این سفر بیشتر در ذهن شما مانده است.🎙️ پادکست پل | The Bridge از افغانستان تا آوتیاروا نیوزیلند و فراتر از آن---In Episode 9, the final episode of Season One of The Bridge, my first journey to New Zealand comes to an end — but the story that journey set in motion is only beginning.During my final days in Auckland, I looked out over the city from the top of the Sky Tower, believing that within a few days I would return to Afghanistan, to Bamyan, and to my normal life. What I did not know was that a proposal we had left on the table during our final meeting at New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs would later become a real ecotourism project — and shape several years of my life and work.In this episode, I reflect on the end of that journey, my return to Afghanistan, the memories I carried home, and a question that had stayed with me throughout the trip: why couldn’t Bamyan use its nature, culture and tourism potential to create new opportunities for local people?Season One of The Bridge ends here, but the story continues. In Season Two, we return to Bamyan — to the story of the ecotourism programme, Band-e Amir, the Silk Road Festival, snow-covered mountains, skiing, visitors from around the world, and many experiences that were never written into official project reports. If you have followed Season One, I would love to hear which episode or moment from the journey stayed with you the most.🎙️ The Bridge | پل From Afghanistan to Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.#پادکست_پل #TheBridgePodcast #بامیان #افغانستان #نیوزیلند #اکوتوریسم #سفر #روایت_زندگی #Bamyan #Afghanistan #NewZealand #Ecotourism

In Episode 8 of The Bridge | پل, I return to the final days of my first journey to New Zealand — a time when I still saw myself simply as a visitor, never imagining that one day this country would become home for me and my family.
In Auckland, I met New Zealand’s Hazara community for the first time. Among them were young people whose migration journeys had eventually brought them to New Zealand following the Tampa crisis. They were now studying, building their lives, and looking towards the future.
That day, I was thinking about their future, without knowing that 17 years later I would become a migrant in the same city.
This episode also includes an unexpected and humorous encounter involving Dr Habiba Sarabi and a group of Afghan women in Auckland. What began as a simple misunderstanding would, many years later, take on a deeper meaning for me — about migration, community, kindness and starting again.
The Bridge | پل shares stories of migration, journeys, identity and new beginnings — from Afghanistan to Aotearoa New Zealand.

From Bamyan to New Zealand: A Proposal on the Foreign Minister’s Desk | Episode 7In this episode of The Bridge, I continue the story of my first journey to New Zealand — a trip intended to learn from the country’s approach to nature and tourism management, which led to an unexpected milestone: bringing the Bamyan ecotourism proposal directly to the desk of New Zealand’s Foreign Minister. At the time, the Bamyan Ecotourism Programme had not yet been established. A Frightening Flight Over Tongariro | The Bridge Podcast – Episode 6In this episode of The Bridge, I continue the story of my first journey to New Zealand. After visiting Porirua, we travelled to Tongariro National Park — not by road, but in a small plane flown by a young pilot who appeared to be only 23 or 24 years old.As we reached the mountains and lakes of Tongariro, the pilot began manoeuvring the plane to give us a closer view of the landscape. What was meant to be a scenic flight soon became one of the most exciting — and frightening — memories of my journey. But this episode is about more than a memorable flight. As I looked down at Tongariro, I found myself thinking about Bamyan, the Baba Mountains and Band-e Amir. Part of the purpose of our visit was to learn how New Zealand protected and managed its national parks, and to consider what lessons could be useful for Band-e Amir in Afghanistan. What I could not have known then was that thirteen years later, I would return to New Zealand under completely different circumstances — not as a visitor, but as a migrant. The country that once seemed like the farthest place in the world would eventually become my second home.🎙️ The Bridge | پلStories of migration, travel, and life between Afghanistan and New Zealand.
زیرنویس انگلیسی این گفتوگو در یوتیوب در دسترس است.---Five years after the fall of Afghanistan and the mass displacement of 2021, Ali Amiri reflects on a journey that began at Kabul Airport and led to a new life in Australia. In this special interview on **The Bridge | پل Podcast**, we return to the final days in Kabul and the fear, uncertainty and sense of collapse experienced by a generation that had grown up during the previous twenty years. The conversation then moves to life after migration. What does it mean to start again in middle age? How much of a migrant’s previous education, professional experience and social position can be carried into a new country? How is the generation that left Afghanistan in 2021 different from earlier waves of migrants? And is the real outcome of migration seen in the first generation—or in the generation that follows?Ali Amiri also speaks about studying and rebuilding his life in Australia, living apart from his family, the Hazara community in Australia, Afghan and Australian identity, belonging and citizenship, mother tongue, and the connection of migrant children to their cultural roots. This is ultimately a personal conversation about migration: from the fear and upheaval of August 2021 to the long process of rebuilding a life, finding a new place in society, and asking what migration takes away—and what new possibilities it can create.🎙️ **The Bridge | پل Podcast**From Afghanistan to Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond — conversations about migration, identity, culture and rebuilding life.English subtitles are available for this interview.#پادکست_پل #علی_امیری #مهاجرت #افغانستان #استرالیا #هزاره #هویت#TheBridgePodcast #AliAmiri #Afghanistan #Australia #Migration #Hazara #Identity

Why Didn’t Bamyan and Porirua Become Sister Cities? | A Bridge Between Afghanistan and New Zealand
Why did a formal agreement between two cities in Afghanistan and New Zealand fail to materialise, while a cultural exhibition created a more lasting connection? 🇦🇫🇳🇿
In Episode 5 of The Bridge, I share a lesser-known story from 2008 about an effort to establish a sister-city relationship between Bamyan, Afghanistan, and Porirua, New Zealand.
It was a hopeful idea that never became official, but the relationship between the two communities did not end there. Instead, it found another path through culture, photography, art and storytelling.
In this episode, you’ll hear about:
• The meeting with the then Mayor of Porirua and Dr Habiba Sarabi
• Why the proposed Bamyan–Porirua sister-city relationship did not go ahead
• The role of PATAKA Art + Museum and the 2010 exhibition Bamyan, Heart of Afghanistan
• The story of Bob Maysmor and his connection with Bamyan
• A different way of seeing Afghanistan beyond stories of war
• How art, photography and storytelling can build lasting cultural bridges
The formal bridge between Bamyan and Porirua was never built, but photography, culture and storytelling found another way to bring the two communities closer together.
📌 Question for this episode:
Do you think cultural and artistic connections can sometimes be more lasting than formal agreements between cities?

Episode 4 | When I Thought I Was Just a Visitor
In 2008, I stood on a hill overlooking Wellington for the first time, thinking this might be the first and last time I would ever see New Zealand.
I had no idea that thirteen years later, life would bring me back to the same country — not as a visitor, but as a migrant, and that New Zealand would eventually become my second home.
In Episode 4 of The Bridge | پل, I continue the story of my first journey to New Zealand in 2008.
I reflect on our official meetings in Wellington, conversations about Bamyan and Afghanistan, a visit to the New Zealand Police, and small moments that shaped my first impressions of this country. I also remember exploring Wellington with my camera and standing above the city, trying to take in a place I believed I might never see again.
At the time, Wellington was simply a distant and unfamiliar city.
I could never have imagined that one day it would become the capital of the country I now call home.
🎙️ In this episode:
• Continuing our journey from Bamyan to Wellington
• Meetings and conversations about Afghanistan and Bamyan
• A small but memorable experience of cultural inclusion
• Exploring Wellington for the first time in 2008
• Why I believed this might be my last visit to New Zealand
• How those memories changed after I returned in 2021
