One definition of broken is: damaged or altered by breaking. Disrupted by change, made weak or infirm, subdued completely; crushed. 

Contrite is defined as: the kind of spirit, or heart, pleasing and acceptable to God. The person with a contrite spirit weeps over wrong doings and express genuine sorry for his sin. (Nelson's Illustrated Dictionary of the Bible)
