Allen challenges himself by buying the omnibus of the culturally acclaimed fantasy series "A Game of Thrones". Starting his journey with the first book, Allen and Danny discuss the the complexities of peripheral main characters, protagonist sabotage, and the riveting world Martin created. There is also a dense conversation about fantasy tropes and how Martin sought to differentiate himself from his contemporaries and past ancestors. That isn't to say the book is without problems; Allen goes into the issues with pacing and structure, as well as the dense writing style. And yes, they do a small compare and contrast with season one of the HBO adaptation. Does the book live up to the hype? Find out on this exciting new Broken Shelf.
Tune in every Tuesday for a new episode of The Broken Shelf.
