About Assault on America: What happens when the wrong lie takes root in millions of minds at once?  On January 6th 2021, a vast constellation of right-wing groups converged on Washington DC to protest the presidential election. They were MAGA fans, Q adherents, Proud Boys, militia members, and outright nazis. Many carried flags and banners; others brought zip-ties and bear spray. They were a disparate group of all ages and backgrounds, but all of them were united and energised by a single lie: that Democrats stole the 2020 election. 
By the end of the day, this falsehood led to the ransacking of the US Capitol, causing five deaths and many hundreds of injuries. 
One journalist saw it coming. On January 5th, Bellingcat investigator and expert on the far right Robert Evans published a report warning of serious action in Washington DC the next day.  
Now, Evans digs into the events of January 6th in forensic detail, identifying key players who spread disinformation and helped to create a riot. He traces the stories of instigators, militia leaders, and far right influencers, and he unpicks a mighty disinformation campaign that was years in the making. 
As Evans journeys deep into the digital fever swamp, he considers a crucial question: was the storming of the US Capitol the final convulsion of a dying movement? Or was it the first shot in a new civil war?
