Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in to Time for English.
Last week, we talked about jobs that wouldn't be around in 20 years. Today, let's look at the expression “to be around". To be around, in this context, means “to exist".
When you say some jobs will not be around in 20 years, it means they will not exist in 20 years. Other jobs will still be around in 20 years. In other words, they will still exist in 20 years.
Let me give you another example. There's a famous old café in my neighborhood. It's been around for a long time. The café has been in existence for over 20 years.
To be around also means to be present at a certain place, usually at a particular time. For example, when someone asks you if you'll be around tomorrow, they want to know if you'll be at a certain place when they come see you there tomorrow.
Now. Would you like to practice together? Please repeat after me:
The café has been around for over 20 years.
