The Cardinal Divide is the gripping and surprising introduction to Cole Blackwater, a political figure who has fallen on hard times, both professionally and at home. Peggy McSorlie, head of the Eastern Slopes Conservation Group, presents Cole with a great opportunity to not only save a beautiful piece of land, but also maybe his career. When a leading opponent turns up murdered, however, Cole realizes hes signed up for far more than a simple PR stunt.

Excellent Murder Mystery

When you purchase a book from a first-time novelist one always wonders how much care has gone into character development and creating a seamless and believable plot. In the case of the Cardinal Divide, it's clear that Legault put a great deal of time into both. His characters are believable, and the plot entices you along for the length of the book, making it difficult to put down. This "enviro murder mystery" is somewhat unique in the genre, and is a breath of fresh air. Not only that, it does what a good murder mystery is supposed to do: it keeps you guessing "whodunnit" right up to the very end.

Lastly, I thought Legault's dialogue was a cut above many first time novelists. He has an adept ear for it, and it shows in his character development.
