The effects of climate change is here. What Now? Our host, Hilmy Yazid talks to one of the familiar faces in environmental activism, Iman Aidil, about how its like as a young environmental activist, environmental apathy, and how to make Kuala Lumpur a liveable city.
He has previously been engaged with United Nations (UN) agencies such as UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on matters related to climate justice activism. Aidil was a key consultant for the Malaysian United Democractic Alliance (MUDA) in designing the party’s environmental manifesto. He is also a Consultative Panel Member for Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Malaysia.
Aidil was a communications campaigner at MyHutan, a youth-led movement powered by Undi18 working on institutionalising forest conservation in Malaysia. Presently, he is a part of the Malaysian Youth Delegation (MYD), a civil society organisation striving towards elevating climate literacy and policymaking locally. At the same time, Aidil founded Kolektif Iklim, a youth environmental initiative aimed at strengthening the synergies between climate action and biodiversity protection in Malaysia. With his friends from University of Malaya, they are leading Climate Relations, an initiative focused on the nexus of environment and international relations.
Aidil is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s of Arts International and Strategic Studies at the University of Malaya. His specific interests lie in youth participation in climate diplomacy and recognising children’s rights to a healthy, sustainable environment.
