The Case For Teaching Your Kids to Disagree With You

Listen Later

My sixteen-year-old son recently told me I was wrong about something. Not with an eye roll or a sigh or something muttered under his breath. He sat across from me, looked me in the eye, laid out his reasoning, and told me — respectfully and clearly — that he thought I was handling something the wrong way. My first instinct was to shut it down. My second, about three seconds later, was to realize he was right.

That moment raised a question I couldn’t shake: did I teach him to do that, or did he learn it in spite of me? Because most of my parenting instincts point toward compliance. Toward because I said so. Toward a model where the parent speaks, the child listens, and the hierarchy is maintained. And that model is producing a generation of adults who can follow instructions but struggle to articulate why they disagree with one.

This episode puts that model on the witness stand. I examine the compliance trap and why what works at seven breaks at fifteen and cripples at thirty, disagreement as a life skill that no school and very few homes explicitly teach, the parent’s ego and why “because I said so” is a defense mechanism not a philosophy, and a practical framework for building the muscle — including three words that changed everything in my house: make your case.

Exhibits: A: The Compliance Trap | B: Disagreement as a Life Skill | C: The Parent’s Ego | D: How to Build the Muscle

Micro-tools: Replace “because I said so” with “make your case” | Narrate your reasoning out loud | Change your mind once this week
