Junko’s case is one that will be told over and over again not necessarily because the harrowing details of her last 44 days are interesting. The details are horrifying and nightmare-inducing, in fact. I think the reason we come back to Junko’s case a lot of times is because we can see pure evil unfolding and destroying a life so full of light and potential just because the perpetrators lacked humanity and empathy so much that some did not even consider them humans anymore.
As a woman, I also see how Junko’s case, an extreme case of femicide, demonstrates yet again that a woman saying NO is not necessarily a safe woman. Junko dared to say NO to a bully and paid for it with her life. May this serve as a reminder that women trying to get away from violent situations and relationships cannot always simply do so without wider repercussions.
