Members Reviews:
Great management book from a veteran of Unilever and Tata!
The case of the bonsai manager is a refreshingly different book.
The author R.Gopalakrishnan has more than 4 decades of management experience in India and abroad.
His experiences are in the blue chip corporates like UniLever and Tata Sons.
I came to know about the author through one of his speeches to college students.
The analogy that the author brings from plant and animal kingdom to explain concepts in management is
new to me and many people will like such colorful examples from life. The analogies help us understand
what he says and also to remember the teaching.
The Bhopal gas tragedy happened when I was in the final year of my college and I still remember it.
The chapter on this incident touched me quite a bit.
Each Chapter has a a few lines of "key messages of this chapter" at the end. This is the distilled form
of each chapter and one should try to remember them.
Nice:
1. Real life corporate stories from India. We are used to American management books that provide examples from American companies only.
There is even a story on the fire in LIC building in Chennai that happened decades ago.
2. The narrative style is easy and the flow is smooth.
3. His own real life experiences are diverse and valuable to the reader.
4. the author comes out as a humble man and definitely not preacher of his own beliefs and practices
It is upto the reader to use the messages into his or her own work life.
5. The Workbook at the end with a few exercises on self-awareness
Suggestion:
Indian companies now have a high growth phase and its attendant confusions. Greed, incompetency, and such
things are also growing in the business houses. The next book from R.Gopalakrishnan should tell us
about living and growing in this growth phase.
Circles of nature and Intuition
The uses of anecdotes from nature are a unique feature of this book. So when Gopalakrishnan talks about utilizing threats for your own good, he talks about Lobster and snailsp69. Threat of lobsters force snails to reproduce at a later age and achieve better growth parameters. Same way a manager should embrace challenges to fuel his or her growth and not shy away from challenges.
Only threats and challenges keep you fit. Lot of people would want to maintain a status quo because they do not want to come out of their comfort zones. So follows the example of Japanese fish trawlers that use sharks in their tanks to keep the fish swimming and fitp71. When there was no shark in Tank, there was no threat and in absence of threats the fishes did not move about much and discerning Japanese did not like the taste of lethargic fish. The lethargic fish were a bit like managers who want to maintain their status quo.
When Gopal wants to preach the lessons of being alert and vigilant he talks about cave crickets that develop extra long antennas to reach food. So not only look for the obvious but also what is not so obvious.
