Publisher's Summary:
Late on a foggy November afternoon, a desperate young woman arrives at Baker Street, imploring Sherlock Holmes to help her. She is terrified about what may be going on inside a secretive London refuge for Russian exiles, where her sister works. Thus begins a frightening case which deeply strains both Holmes and Watson because of the dreadful consequences of failure and the mystifying nature of the forces against them.
The case leads into strange territory. Into the circles of Victorian radicals and idealists, where early feminists and socialists rub shoulders with exiled foreign revolutionaries. To a utopian anarchist commune in the Essex wilderness, which imitates the Tolstoy farm communes in Russia. Deep into the very dark political world from which so many Russian exiles have fled. The trail leads on - to one shocking discovery after another, as Holmes unravels a conspiracy as evil and twisted as a labyrinth in hell.
Narrated by Dr. Watson, The Case of the Russian Chessboard respects Sherlock Holmes traditions and 1890s historical facts. Mingling mystery with gaslight, it offers a gripping, atmospheric and thought-provoking listen.

Reads like a Rough Draft
I think that the author took a rather solid idea, then tried to cram too much detail into too few pages. This story has promise, and I urge the author to think hard about at least publishing an extended edition. I, for one, would buy it! Quoth the Raven...
The Case of the Russian Chessboard
I won a copy of"The Case of the Russian Chessboard", a Sherlock Holmes Mystery by Charlie Roxburgh through the Goodreads Giveaway Contest.
Charlie Roxburgh writes imitation Sherlock Holmes stories, respecting the characters of Holmes and Watson that have a solid factual basis in late 1890's.The story is narrated by Dr. Watson set in the the 1890s London.
The plot centers around a young desperate woman, Victoria Simmonds, who seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes, to save her sister, Angela, who she believes is in grave danger.
A young woman, Sophie, a friend of Angela and Victoria, had thrown herself in front of a train, to her death.Sophie was found with a Russian passport on her.Sophie was living at a hostel,"Liberty House" the same one Angela had moved in recently.
Angela worked at the Liberty House as a volunteer helper, learning Russian in the interim, deeply committed to the anti-Czarist movement.
The story is only 108 pages, but don't be fooled, the writing style is compact in content. There are lots of Russian names in this book, and this book is not one that can be skimmed. An enjoyable read.
Sherlock Holmes and the Ghost of Robert Harris
This is a great story that should really appeal to Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts. Charlie Roxburgh certainly knows his stuff: he has mastered the Holmes idiom brilliantly, with the indignant Watson and the supersleuth moving from Baker Street and the Foreign Office to London's Hyde Park, where a bicycling murderess appears through the gloomy mist of a 'London particular' with a water carbide lamp on her handlebars and a revolver in her pocket. The author also knows a great deal - more even than Conan Doyle - about the devious machinations of Russian anarchists and the Czarist secret police at the turn of the century. All this - so it seems - is based on careful historical research.
