At the beginning of October 2017, a referendum on Catalonian independence sparked a furious response from the Spanish state, amid accusations that the secessionist politicians and civil society activists behind the poll had committed sedition and rebellion and misused public funds.

Over the past four months, those charges have been controversially tested in a trial at Spain's Supreme Court, featuring 12 leaders of the independence movement. A verdict is expected this year and if found guilty the defendants could face many years in prison.

The case has raised serious questions about the independence of the Spanish judiciary, because of concerns over the state's decision to treat this deeply divisive issue as a criminal rather than political matter. 

We sent filmmakers Sarah Spiller and Callum Macrae to investigate.

Its activities are deadly and harmful, not just for many consumers of its products but also for those who cross it or try and stand in its way. Along with rival cartels, it is responsible for tens of thousands of brutal murders and it corrupts almost everything it touches - government, law enforcement, public institutions - with a sea of dirty narco-money.

Coronavirus: Lockdown Italy | People and Power

Thailand has begun lifting restrictions after a steady decline in the number of coronavirus infections.
But many people still need help putting food on the table and some businesses are expected to struggle.
The government will evaluate the situation every two weeks - either determining to further ease the restrictions - or if there is a spike in confirmed cases, they will reimpose some of the restrictions.

Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Bangkok.
