The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 10, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, still restless, Holden changes and goes downstairs to the Lavender Room. Before leaving the room though, he considers calling his sister again, but decides against it. He describes Phoebe and she seems to be very similar to Allie, described in chapter 5. In the Lavender room, Holden takes a able, and tries to order a cocktail, claiming that he is usually able to get alcohol because of his grey hair, but the waiter refuses. He flirts with three women who are visiting from Seattle. They appear to be amused but uninterested in the young man who tries to be older. After tolerating him for a while, they begin to laugh with him; they also depress him by being obsessed with movie stars. Holden lies and claims to see Gary Cooper, and one of the girls runs back and tells her friends. He then pays for their drinks, and then leaves.
