The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 11, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, Holden thinks about Jane as he leaves the lobby. Their families’ summer homes in Maine were next door to each other, and he met her after his mother confronted Jane’s about their dog constantly relieving itself on their lawn. Holden and Jane became close, she was the only person that Holden ever showed Allie’s baseball glove to. One day, Jane’s alcoholic stepfather came out onto the porch where Holden and she were playing checkers, and asked Jane for a cigarette; Jane refused to answer him, and, when he left, she began to cry. Holden held and kissed her trying to comfort her. Apart from that, their relationship was tame, but they held hands constantly. Holden suddenly feels upset, and he returns to his room. He notices that the “Pervert’s” lights are off and decided to go downstairs again and get a cab.
