The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 2, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, Holden meets with his old teacher Mr. spencer, who berates him for his lousy behavior and lack of effort in his classes. He agrees with the headmaster of Pencey's statement that "Life is a game", and tells Holden that he needs to learn to play by the rules. Spencer clearly likes Holden, but is deeply disappointed by him too, further stating this by reading from one of Holden's responses to an exam question. Holden, hating being lectured fabricated an excuse to get out, and interrupts Spencer to return to leave
