After Luce leaves, Holden continues to get incredibly drunk at the bar. He staggers to a phone booth and makes a very drunk, late-night call to Sally Hayes, infuriating both her and her grandmother. He then tries to make a date with one of the singers, but that fails, so he tries again with the hat-check girl.   
He decides to go to the duck pond in Central Park to see if the ducks are still there. En route, he becomes very depressed when he drops the record he bought for Phoebe. His hair starts to freeze from the cold as he splashed his face, and hair with water to try and sober up. At the pond, he worries about getting pneumonia and imagines his funeral. He says that when Allie died, he smashed all of the garage windows with his bare hands and was in the hospital when his funeral took place.   
He wants to talk with Phoebe and is running low on cash. He thinks his parents will be asleep, and thus pose him no threat of being caught, so he beings the long walk home.
