The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 22, Narrated by Isaac Birchall
Holden comes back to talk to Phoebe, and eventually explains why he has failed all of his classes and tells her all of the things he hates about school; she accuses him of hating everything and challenges him to think of one think that he likes.  He gets distracted by thinking about the nuns, and a boy he knew at Elkton Hills who jumped out of a window and died.  
He finally says that he likes Allie, and she reminds him bitterly that Allie is dead. She asks what he wants to do with his life, and he responds with the lyric “if a body catch a body comin’ through the rye.” Holden says that he imagines a field of rye on a cliff full of children playing. He wants to stand near the edge of the cliff and catch all of the children when they come to close to falling – “The Catcher in the Rye.” Phoebe points out that Holden has misheard the words, and that the actual lyric is “If a body meet a body coming through the rye.”
