The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 24, narrated by Isaac Birchall
Holden arrives at Mr. Antolini’s house just after he and his wife have finished hosting a party. Plates and Glasses are all over the place, and Mr. Antolini has been drinking quite a lot. Mr. Antolini questions Holden about his expulsion and Holden states that he disliked the Rules at Pencey. Holden given an example of their debate class wherein students were docked marks for digressing from their subject. Holden says that he thinks that this rule was dumb because sometimes the digressions are more interesting than the subject. Mr. Antolini then challenges Holden and points out that digressions are often distracting, and that is someone is digressing too much then it isn’t the fault of the rules, but the fault of the individual who should have chosen a different topic, one from which they wouldn’t digress.
After a break for coffee, Mr. Antolini begins anew the discussion on a more serious note. He tells Holden that he is ready for a large fall, a fall that will leave him bitter and frustrated even more at the world and the boys that he went to school with. Holden becomes defensive, and argues that he, after a while starts to like boys like Stradlater and Ackley. Mr. Antolini then further explains that the fall he sees, is experienced by men who cannot cope in the world around them. But says that if Holden were to apply himself in school, he will learn that many people have been just as disturbed, and that it is called the “Human Condition,” and that he will learn a large amount about himself. He then sees that Holden is very tired, and helps him to make the bed, then after some small talk, Holden goes to sleep.
Holden then suddenly awakens and feels Mr. Antolini’s hand stroking his head. Holden believes that Mr. Antolini is trying to make a move on him and rushes out of the apartment confused and scared.
