The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger,  chapter 25, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter Holden heads to Grand Central Station after fleeing My. Antolini’s, where he spends the night on a bench in the waiting room.  The next day, he walks up and down 5th Avenue, watching kids and becoming more and more nervous, and more and more overwhelmed. Every time he cross the street he started to feel like he was going to disappear, and calls out to Allie to help get him to the other side. He decides that he is leaving New York, and that he is going to hitchhike out west, and never go home again, living like a hermit, and not talking to anybody.
He then goes to Phoebe’s school and writes her a note telling her to meet him at the Museum of Art so that he can give her back the money she lent him. As he wanders the school, he becomes more depressed than ever when he finds swears written on the walls.
While waiting at the museum, Holden guides two children to the mummies. He leads them down the hall to the tombs exhibit, but the two kids get scared and run off, leaving Holden alone where he sees another swear carved into the wall.   Disturbed, he ponders his own death, and concludes that someone will probably write swears on his tombstone too. He goes to leave the museum but passes out on the way to the bathroom.
Outside, phoebe arrives with her own suitcase, and she pleads Holden to take her with him. He feels dizzy again and tells her that she cannot come with him and feels like he is going to feint again.  Phoebe gets angry and turns away from him after forcing his hunting hat back onto him. Holden tells her that he won’t go and asks her to go back to school. She again refuses to talk or listen, and Holden offers to take her to the Zoo.
They walk towards the zoo, Holden on one side of the road, and Phoebe on the other, occasionally going out of sight behind passing busses. After looking at some of the animals, they walk to the park. They arrive at the carousel, and Holden convinces Phoebe to get on it. He sits and watches her go around and around. Having made up with his sister, Holden starts to feel so happy he believes that he might cry.
