Chapter 11 of the Epistle to the Hebrews is one of the classic passages of the New Testament. The reason is not so much that its poetic language is equal to that of 1 Corinthians 13 or its impact as powerful as that of Romans 8. Rather its sheer weight of witness and its dynamic and unforgettable definition of faith penetrate the very core of the modern heart.
This chapter cannot be separated from the section just preceding. Our faith is based upon the perfect and sufficient sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is that sacrifice, completed once for all time and for all people, which opens for us a way into the very presence of God in whose presence we can come with holy boldness, free of all fear of holy retribution, utterly confident of forgiveness in the face of God. Looking ahead, this chapter also becomes the launching pad of the next, regarding Christian discipline. The same God of love who has made His unique sacrifice for us also disciplines and brings us wholesome maturity by His own design and grace.
