Publisher's Summary:
"Len Cooper is ample proof that every American black man's story is not the same. He has been a boy in brutal segregated Alabama and an invisible homeless man in the nation's capital. He sought holiness and comfort, entering a monastery to become a priest at a time when the Catholic Church was in denial about racism, homosexuality, and robed predators. Still, Cooper rises to become a writer and a world traveler who finds solace and home in a land that is supposed to be foreign: Israel." THIS IS ART
This book is truly amazing. I am by no means a non-fiction reader. I get some recommended to me and I usually have to force myself to read them and it takes forever. Len's story was nothing like that. From the moment I started it, I couldn't put it down. It caused some issues at work since I was staying up all hours of the night reading, well worth it. The story brings you in and puts you right next to Len and his brothers while dealing with Alabama life. After reading this book I realize I lead a very sheltered life and I for one am thankful that my eyes have been opened to a great many things. I told the author himself, that his book has changed me in ways I have yet to discover. The biggest message I took away from this story was love and forgiveness. At times I was laughing out loud and grinning ear to ear, and at others, I was wiping tears of sadness and disbelief from my eyes as I learned about the struggles Len endured and the evil that exists in the world. By now I have told hundreds about this book, pretty much anyone I meet or come across I've invited to read it. I have never written a book review before, but this book is well worthy of your consideration. I hope you find the time to read it and learn from the most interesting men I have ever had the honor of meeting.
Rich On Many Levels
I am so grateful to have read this book and consider it an honor! You see, although I am an educated woman in my mid fifties and have read historical accounts of racism, I never truly understood it in such depth.
I am not and have never been prejudiced. I was, however, somewhat ignorant of what other races and cultures endure even today. I can't imagine a world where a school or church is considered black or white; and my heart ached when I read about the police stopping Mr. Cooper based on the color of his skin. In addition, his treatment while in seminary was and is reprehensible! Please know, Mr. Cooper, that is not representative of God who loves you and yearns for your return to seeking Him.
This book is very well written and though I got it for free on my kindle fire, I'd have definitely bought and paid for it. It is rich in substance and makes the time period come alive. I did not want to see it end and would highly recommend this book!
Great Book!!!
I read the Kindle Version of this book and I really enjoyed the read.
I have known Len Cooper since kindergarten and this book was an eye opener. He was always this sweet, innocent, quiet and respectful young man with those innocent eyes. Many things mentioned I remember happening in elementary, high school and college. It is thought-provoking to read his take on him being a black man born in racist Birmingham, Alabama.
