In I Peter 3:1-7 we are given a lesson that covers another area in which the Christian’s should be submissive. We hear that word often in the Bible. Jesus is an example of how to submit to God. In the home, church, and government we are to be submissive to various requirements. The home was designed by God in Genesis 2:18-24 when he created a wife for Adam, and He had some specific directions for how the relationship should be conducted. In God’s sight, the husband and wife are equal, but they have different roles in the home and church. Just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are the Godhead, they have different roles. While a wife is subject to the husband, if he is not obeying God’s Word then she may help lead him to God in various ways. Peter also tells us that a wife does not need to adorn herself with jewelry, fancy clothes, and outward appearance. But she should let her heart be the incorruptible adornment of a meek and quiet spirit which is more valuable than anything to God. Don’t focus on your looks, but focus on the purity and the beauty that is within your heart. Yes, in Verse 5 we are told that it is acceptable to adorn yourselves as in Old Testament times as you remember to honor and respect your husband. In these troubled times of today when families are falling apart, we need to return to Godly homes and relationships. Both God-fearing husbands and wives are the key to renewing our broken world.
