The Church Is Keeping Secrets from Men

The Church Is Keeping Secrets from Men The Jake Giffin Podcast | ft. Mark Osborne

Most men sitting in church pews on Sunday morning have never been told the full truth. They've been given grace without repentance. Forgiveness without accountability. A God who loves them but never one they should fear. The result is a generation of Christian men who are spiritually passive, morally drifting, and quietly wondering why nothing in their lives reflects the faith they claim to hold.

This conversation changes that.

Jake Giffin sits down with Mark Osborne — founder and host of The Valiant Forge Podcast — for a direct, unfiltered conversation about what biblical manhood actually costs and what the modern church has been too afraid to say out loud. Mark has spent decades working with Christian men, and his framework is built on one conviction that comfort-culture Christianity keeps trying to bury: men are not built through ease. They are forged through pressure, adversity, and the kind of fear of God that produces real obedience — not just Sunday morning attendance.

This is not a motivational episode. It is a mirror.

WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS

The conversation moves through six major areas that the modern church has either softened, ignored, or gotten completely backwards.

The Fear of God vs. the Love of Jesus — Mark draws a sharp line between two things men tend to conflate. You can love Jesus and still not fear God. He walks through John Bevere's work on the awe of God and unpacks why reverence without accountability is not reverence at all. A man who stops fearing God doesn't stop believing — he just stops obeying. The consequences of that gap are everywhere.

Grace Presumption — The cotton candy gospel has produced a generation of men who treat grace like a hall pass. Sin on Monday, confess on Sunday, repeat. Mark and Jake go after the theology behind that cycle and why repentance that doesn't include turning is not repentance at all. They reference Romans 6 and the Paul question directly: are we going to keep sinning so grace can abound? The answer has not changed.

The Discipleship Gap — Mark shares his own 40-year wilderness story. Saved at 14, never properly discipled, and left to wander through decades of casual Christianity until God forced a reckoning. He connects his story to the broader failure of the institutional church to do what it was actually commissioned to do — make disciples, not just converts. Jake connects it to his own Calvary Chapel background and the model of showing up to services without the depth of real brotherhood.

The Church Softness Problem — Both men take on the cultural feminization of church culture — not as a shot at women, but as an honest diagnosis of what happens when men stop leading. The result is a church that preaches to the least threatened instincts in the room. Comfort. Inclusion. Niceness. The men drift. The families follow.

Leading vs. Bossing — One of the sharpest segments of the conversation. Biblical headship does not mean control. A man who has to tell his wife to follow him has already lost the plot. Real leadership is directional — you know where you're going, you've counted the cost, and the people around you trust you because you've proven it. Mark is transparent about his own failures as a husband and the work it took to earn that trust back.

Get Up and Fight Back — The episode closes with a word to men who keep falling. Get back up. But at some point, getting back up is not enough. You have to start punching. Mark uses the boxing metaphor with precision — resilience without counterattack is just slow losing. The call is to stop tolerating the cycles and start fighting the actual enemy.
